Burlington High School Citizens of the Month

$

0
As we work to integrate our core values, learning expectations, and mission statement into all aspects of our school curriculum and culture, we are developing new forms of recognition. This year, in addition to the Student of the Month, we will name BHS Citizens of the Month. Our goal for each month is to identify both a student and a faculty/staff member who exemplifies responsible citizenship and demonstrates the school’s mission:

A responsible citizen in 21st century America works to uphold and promote core democratic values by seeking knowledge and understanding, communicating openly and honestly, serving the common good, and engaging in civic action.  A responsible citizen values and affirms all members of the community and advocates for equity and justice. The BHS Responsible Citizen of the Month is someone whose actions demonstrate these core values and reflect the school’s mission.

OCTOBER’s BHS STUDENT CITIZEN OF THE MONTH - JESSIE GOOBER

Jessie has piloted an extension of the United Nations-sponsored Girl Up! Club, which advocates for equity, education, and equal rights for girls around the world and specifically in developing countries. Jessie is passionate about global feminism, educating women, and promoting gender parity in the US and throughout the world. As the advisor of the club, I have a firsthand knowledge of Jessie's commitment to understanding different perspectives in our school; her desire to bring students together in leadership roles; and her enthusiasm and commitment to helping young women at home and across the globe achieve their fullest potential.

OCTOBER’s BHS STAFF CITIZEN OF THE MONTH - CHRISTINE WEEDEN

Ms. Weeden consistently supports school projects and promotes school initiatives. She helps her students to recognize the need to serve the community and assists them in their endeavors to do so. While her recent work on Dig Pink is evidence of her ability to model civic action and to engage the Burlington community in an effort to make a difference, that project is just one example of her impact at BHS.  Ms. Weeden inspires others through her actions and her attitude. By building strong relationships with students and colleagues, helping to affirm all members of our community, and working to prompt positive change, Chrissy inspires those around her to do the same.

Rana Hussein is a hardworking student at Burlington High School who is passionately curious about learning.  She has a wide array of interests, and her rigorous and varied selection of courses during her time in high school, from AP Calculus to AP World History to AP English, has reflected this.  Rana began attending Burlington High School when she moved from New Jersey to Burlington at the start of her junior year.  Since then, she has embraced the exciting opportunities that her new environment had to offer.

At her previous school, Rana was a member of the science league team, math team, and the school newspaper.  Outside of school, she was also an involved member of an organization called Girls’ Advisory Council, which was dedicated to taking steps toward resolving issues of gender inequality. Rana was also a violinist in  her school orchestra, a class she always looked forward to despite the sometimes frustrating practice sessions and occasional harsh criticisms from her conductor, because the final product was always an emotion-evoking musical telling of the story of The Phantom of the Opera or a thrilling collection of the Harry Potter soundtrack  which would eventually lead her group to state qualifiers of the Teen Arts Festival.

When she moved to Burlington, Rana found that several of her previous activities were not offered, so she embraced the school’s new opportunities. She became a member of Multicultural Club, which allows students to understand diverse cultures, and became vice president as a senior.  She was initially drawn to the club’s open discussion of cultural awareness, which was not as prevalent in her previous school, and enjoyed organizing the club’s main event, Holiday Traditions, which allows students to share elements of their culture with others through food, music, traditional clothing, and posters.  Rana has also been a member of peer tutoring club since her junior year and became co-president of the club as a senior.  She also became a member of NHS, where she became the Community Service Coordinator.  Outside of school, Rana has volunteered as a summer camp counselor at GCLEA for two years, ran the children’s summer reading desk at the public library, and currently works at Kumon.  Rana is passionate about giving back to her community and was able to do so through all of her clubs and activities.

Rana plans to attend a four-year college but is still unsure about what field of study she would like to pursue.  She loves to read and write and enjoys analyzing literature for broader themes, but also enjoys the systematic logic required of the math and sciences.  Rana hopes to tap into both of these areas of interest in whatever path she chooses to pursue, but regardless of wherever this path leads her, she is excited to face all of the academic opportunities of her future.

Ben Horgan is a senior at Burlington High School. He is a hardworking student who is committed to his schoolwork. Ben has a passion for learning and challenges himself academically; he has been taking AP courses since his sophomore year, being currently enrolled in AP Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics, along with honors literature and Latin. He has been on the High Honor Roll almost every term throughout his high school career. He hopes to attend a prestigious technical college to bring him to his goal of being an artificial intelligence-focused computer scientist. He is currently the lead programmer for a video game he is developing at the help desk with his friends. He has coded multiple other games and utilities, such as a graphing calculator and a version of 20Q. The summer before his senior year, he interned for Interlock Technology, a data migration company, where he coded a utility to help clients search large feedback files.

Aside from his interest in computing, Ben is heavily involved outside of academics. He coordinates meetings and school-wide events as the current Executive Board President of Student Council, having served three previous years as Class Vice President. He is the Secretary of the BHS chapter of National Honor Society, of which he has been a part since sophomore year. He enjoys mathematics and is a captain of the BHS Math League. He is also a Mentor Leader for the school’s team of student mentors. He is additionally involved with Latin Club and Programming Club. He has enjoyed acting in BHS dramas and musicals and hopes to continue in this year’s shows. He enjoys playing the guitar and has been in a band for the past four years, performing at BHS’s Battle of the Bands the past two.

Ben plans to continue his passions in college. He would appreciate an opportunity to attend any of a number of universities with great computer science programs.

BHS Student Day of Poetry

Guest Post from Mrs. Callie Graham - BHS Student Day of Poetry

BHS students are poets! They are writers who tell stories about themselves, about the world they live in, and about what is most important to them. Today, at the Third Annual BHS Student Day of Poetry, they had the opportunity to develop their writing and to share their words and thoughts with their peers.
By partnering with Mass Poetry, we were able to bring two acclaimed poets to BHS to facilitate writing workshops. Each poet ran two sessions – guiding students through various exercises to help them jumpstart their own work.
Identity Through Storytelling, facilitated by Rage Hezekiah
rageRage Hezekiah is a Cave Canem and MacDowell Fellow who earned her MFA from Emerson College. She is the recipient of the Saint Botolph Emerging Artist Award in Literature and was nominated for Best New Poets, 2017. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Fifth Wednesday, Columbia Poetry Review, Hayden’s Ferry Review, The Cape Rock, and Tampa Review, as well as other journals. Her writing is featured in various anthologies including Other Tongues:Mixed Race Women Speak Out and Nasty Women Poets: An Anthology of Subversive Verse.
In this workshop students discussed LGBTQIA+ voice and how identity informs poetic storytelling. They explored poetry by contemporary poets and talked about bringing their own stories to the page. Language is a powerful tool, central in how we identify ourselves, and through poetry we can embrace that power to talk about who we are. This workshop emphasized how to incorporate our holistic, intersectional identities into our poems.
Tupac, Hip Hop, and Love Poems, facilitated by Neiel Israel
neielNeiel Israel is an internationally acclaimed poet, vocalist, and arts educator. Emerging from the Boston spoken-word scene, she quickly distinguished herself as a powerful, and lyrical poetic force.  She is a member of the 2017 Boston Poetry Slam Team, and represented the 2016 Boston Poetry Slam at both the National Poetry Slam and the Individual World Poetry Slam as the World Qualifier winner.  She has previously represented the Lizard Lounge at Nationals (2011-2015) and the Women of the World Poetry Slam (2011). As an international teaching artist, Neiel leads workshops, seminars and classes in creative writing for colleges/universities, schools, community, and art programs.
This workshop helped students to draw connections between poetry, hip hop and oral-traditions related to hip-hop culture, while also exploring hip hop’s intersection of love, family, and community. The workshop was a fun, safe and supportive environment for students to read, write, recite, and listen to one another’s work.
Following the workshops, the students attended an open mic where both Rage and Neiel performed their work, and students had an opportunity to share what they wrote throughout the day.
For more pictures from the day, please see Mrs. Graham's POST.

Congratulations to the 68 members of the class of 2018 on their qualifying to receive a John and Abigail Adams Scholarship.  This scholarship represents the level of academic excellence and college and career preparation we want all BHS students to aspire to.  The faculty and staff at BHS commend these students for their hard work and dedication to their studies.

From the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education:
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university. The scholarship covers tuition only; fees and room and board are not included. The scholarship must be used within six years of a student's high school graduation.

Beginning with the class of 2016, in order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must
  • score at the Advanced performance level on one of the three high school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics, or STE (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering); AND
  • score at the Proficient level or higher on the remaining two high school state assessment tests; AND
  • have combined scores from the three tests that place them in the top 25 percent of students in the graduating class in their district.

Scholarship eligibility is based on each student's first attempt at taking the spring grade 10 MCAS tests in ELA and Mathematics (and for students in the class of 2016 and beyond, first attempt at taking one of the four STE tests). In order to receive the scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a Massachusetts public high school in his or her senior year. Students who qualify for the scholarship will receive award letters and further information in the fall of their senior year.

Congratulations to Burlington High School’s November STAFF CITIZEN OF THE MONTH
Krista Anderson

Krista Anderson goes above and beyond in her role here at BHS. She organized an event and heavily promoted the Pull-for-Amy event and the t-shirt sales supporting Amy and breast cancer awareness.

Krista positively motivates her students and the faculty. She builds a sense of community and works hard to encourage students to become better citizens. Krista has really utilized her role as an educator and club advisor to rally support for Breast Cancer Awareness; she really has been a superstar with this and other community causes.

She embodies all of the characteristics required for this nomination through her hard work, lively personality, and "above and beyond" dedication to establishing a community here at BHS.

Congratulations to Burlington High School’s November STUDENT CITIZEN OF THE MONTH
Mark Wilshusen

Mark Wilshusen is committed to finding a cure for cancer. As a cancer survivor himself, he has the passion to make a difference. He encouraged the DECA club last spring to adopt the American Cancer Society as our charity focus for the year and when a staff member was found to have cancer this fall, he rallied to find a way to help and support her through dedicating the Burlington American Cancer Society's Pull for a Cure fundraiser to her. He worked tirelessly to get the school aware of the event through the morning and TV announcements, creating and selling shirts, ribbons and a banner for all to sign to support the teacher. Behind the scenes, he ran around organizing everything and making sure everything was set up correctly. Through his efforts, the high school raised over $3000. He exemplifies serving the common good in a hope to make a difference for those who fight cancer.

Nick Vallerand, is a senior at Burlington High School. He is a studious, persistent student with an open mind ready to learn. He comes from a family of five children and he is the middle child. He pushes himself academically as he has taken AP classes both his junior and senior year.

In his junior year, he took AP World History and in his senior year, he is taking AP Environmental Science.  He is also challenged by his other classes at the honors level. He believes strongly that if he puts his mind to it, and he tries his hardest, he will be successful both academically and socially and personally as well.

He is involved in activities here at BHS including a member of the DECA Club, a BHS mentor, a Rotary Interact member and most recently he has been admitted to the National Honor Society.

In the DECA Club, Nick holds a leadership position in the Club.  DECA is a co-curricular club of marketing, management and entrepreneurship students. During competitions, they learn 'real life' skills. He has traveled to the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim California where he attended various leadership development meetings. Nick plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration in College so he feels his DECA involvement is crucial to his future plans.

Nick is also involved in the mentoring program at BHS. He has mentored members of the freshman class both his junior and senior years. He enjoys helping the freshmen adjust to the transition between middle and high school, as he remembers his transition was not as smooth when he left MSMS to come to BHS. He is always willing to be there to answer any questions these young students may have about BHS.

Nick also has a part-time job during the school year at the Burlington Ice Palace that he enjoys very much. In the summertime, he works for his parent's pest control company, NW Pest Control in customer service. He enjoys working as the income he earns helps him to feel independent.

He is successful today due to his hard work, determination and commitment both in and out of school. He believes all of these experiences have helped to shape him into the person he is today.

Meghan Gaffney is a senior at Burlington High School and has enjoyed getting involved in many different activities over the last four years. She has taken a rigorous course schedule from honor classes to Advanced Placement classes in Chemistry, Statistics, Biology, and World History, all the while making high honors and honor roll throughout her entire four years at Burlington High School.

This academic success invited her to join the National Honors Society, a group that she has been a member of both her junior and senior year. Meghan has been taking Italian for four years and during her junior year, she became Treasurer of the Italian club which led her to become President in her senior year. Meghan is an extremely well-rounded student, who is a role model to her younger peers. This caused her to take on the role of mentor to the incoming freshman class, sharing her insights into academic success, while being able to manage her time for the many extra curriculum activities that she is involved in.

Her senior year she became a mentor leader, advising and training the other mentors. Meghan is a student athlete who participates in three varsity sports: field hockey, ice hockey, and softball.  Her competitive nature and her love of playing have earned her the captain role for all three teams in her senior year.  Outside of school, Meghan continues her love of hockey by volunteering for the town of Burlington’s skating program, where she tries to pass on this passion she has for the sport.  Meghan also enjoys volunteering at the Burlington Food Pantry, for the Burlington Education road race and the Burlington Recreation Department. Meghan has worked at several jobs during the summer and school year.  She has been a pool supervisor at Simonds wading pool, and for the last two years, Meghan has been working at Winchester Hospital in the food services department. Meghan plans to attend a four-year college and is excited about what future opportunities are waiting for her.

Rutvi Shah is a senior at Burlington High School. She is an intellectually curious student who has embraced challenging courses throughout her time at BHS. Currently, she is enrolled in AP Literature, U.S. History, World History, Physics, and Calculus, as well as honors Latin. Her academic achievement has rewarded her with multiple High Honor Roll statuses.

Rutvi has used her years at BHS to grow and develop her passions. Experiences such as her AP Language and Composition class and her four-year involvement in student government have strengthened her voice and fueled her interest in social activism.  Her junior year, Rutvi organized an event for writing letters to victims of human rights violations and their governments, as an effort to encourage BHS participation in the global campaign called Write for Rights.

Accordingly, Rutvi cares deeply about positively influencing her community. As the Executive Secretary of the Student Council, she heads the service committee, of which she has been a member since her freshmen year.  Rutvi has helped organize efforts such as a Toys for Tots drive and a dance with the local senior citizens. With her position as the President of the Amnesty International Club, she has also helped in leading a supply collection drive for Syrian refugees. In addition, Rutvi plans to coordinate several other service projects through the Burlington National Honor Society chapter, having recently been elected as its Vice President.

Outside of school, Rutvi has worked at the education company, Kumon, and has volunteered at Lahey Hospital. After graduating, Rutvi intends to sustain her passions in college. She is excited about the opportunities to come!

In his years at BHS, Sarvesh Sakunala has strived to challenge himself academically,  taking honors and AP courses, and has been on the high honors and honor roll for all of his four years of high school. Some of his favorite classes so far include AP United States History, AP Language, and AP Chemistry.

Sarvesh has contributed positively to the BHS community. Playing the clarinet since the 4th grade, Sarvesh is an active member of the Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. As a senior, he became a Clarinet Section Leader in the band, and he is proud to see the progress his section has made over the course of the marching season. In addition, Sarvesh has been in the Peer Tutoring Club for 3 years and is now a Co-President. Due to his extracurricular achievements, Sarvesh has been in the National Honor Society since his sophomore year.

Sarvesh is also passionate about helping others and giving back to his community. He joined the Amnesty International Club in his freshman year with the intention of aiding victims of humans rights violations around the globe. Sarvesh has also been a member of the UNICEF Club for two years and this year was elected as Vice-President. He has volunteered at the Burlington Public Library, and he also has over 200 hours of volunteering at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. During his third summer volunteering at Lahey, he enjoyed mentoring other volunteers as a Shift Leader. Outside of school, Sarvesh tutors at the Kumon Math and Reading Center.

Sarvesh enjoys studying the sciences, and in particular, biology and chemistry. He hopes to pursue biology at a 4-year university, perhaps in the medical research field, and he is excited to see what the future holds for him.

year, he has been a passionate learner of the Spanish language and of the people of the Spanish speaking world. His eagerness to want to communicate with the Hispanic community members at school or during his job(s) motivated him to develop excellent near-native fluency skills.

As an active member of the Spanish Club since 9th grade, Joel currently is one of the co-presidents and takes his leadership role seriously.  He spends time at club meetings educating his peers about service to community members, including Spanish speakers living in nearby towns.  He has been an active participant and this year, a leader in organizing donation drives for the More Than Words organization and YWCA Fia House of Lawrence Food Drive.

Most notably, he takes time out of his day to reflect with teachers and his peers about current events, natural disasters, and every day BHS activities.  He is a model to his peers on how to develop positive relationships with others.
